Herb Walne began his career in the automotive repair business in January of 1956 with a Humble Oil (Exxon) service station on Northwest Highway and Easton Road in Northeast Dallas. Founded in 1956, Herb’s Paint & Body quickly grew into a family of auto repair businesses famous for superior customer service.
Herb (in picture buffing car) knew customer service would be the businesses most important quality and instilled this same mindset in his son Alan (in pictured with blue shorts). Soon after opening the gas station, Herb added a full service mechanical shop, followed by a state-of-the-art, drive-through car wash.
Herb’s next addition, a full-service paint and body shop, has become an icon in and around the Dallas area. Herb’s Paint & Body Shops have evolved to become Herb Walne’s signature on the city of Dallas. Today, there are eight full-service Herb’s Paint & Body Shops in the Dallas metroplex, and not surprisingly, superior customer service is still our number one concern.
Alan Walne, Herb’s son, is the Chairman of Herb’s Paint & Body. Like his parents, Alan is a native of Dallas, and his love for Dallas shows. Over the years, he has served on the East Dallas Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Highlands YMCA, Richardson Independent School District committees, and the Eastfield Community College Advisor Committee, to name a few. He served on the Dallas Park and Recreation Board, and was a seven-year City Council representative for District 10.
Alan currently serves on the boards of Trinity Commons, State Fair of Texas, the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Dallas Arboretum, and Skillman Corridor TIF, as well as the Lake Highlands Exchange Club and the Salesmanship Club of Dallas. The list goes on, but the important thing is that Alan has always been actively involved in Dallas because he loves Dallas, and wants it to be a better place for his wife Joan, their children (Sarah and Robert) and grandchildren (Will, Mary Kate, Lucy and Brett).
Alan’s son, Robert (Herb’s grandson) is serving as President and COO, managing the operations of each shop as well as providing strategic planning for the future of Herb’s Paint & Body. Robert grew up in the family business, spending most summers working in the shop. After graduating from Baylor University in May 2004 with a BBA in Finance & Real Estate, he joined the Herb’s team full time. He spent his first year in the Richardson location learning estimating, parts and production. In the spring of 2005, Robert moved into a marketing role in the corporate office.
Robert was born and raised in Lake Highlands. He married his high school sweetheart, Stephani, in April 2005 and they are proud parents to Lucy (April 2009) and Brett (February 2012). In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, volunteering with the State Fair Chairman’s Task Force, Dallas Blue Foundation and his church, Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas.
