World Famous Recipe:
The History: The recipe behind Jimmy Don's Picante Sauce did not come about easily. The quest for the ultimate blend of tomatoes, peppers and spices got started in 1982. I gathered advice on ingredients and recipes wherever I could get them. The final recipe wound up as a mixture of bits and pieces of other recipes, along with some secrets of our own. These ingredients were passed on to us from a diverse group of people such as, restaurant owners, busboys, a man who mows yards, Cheech and Chong, a border patrol officer, a roofer and even something passed down from Santa Anna himself. After 4 years and countless combinations of these ingredients, the final version of this mystifying Tex-Mex delicacy was pronounced "table ready". The final version quickly became somewhat addictive to those who tried it along the way. It's most often described by first timers as a little bit different, some say it's kinda sweet, while others say it's not too hot but it does have a little bit of a kick. Almost everyone agrees that it is the best they have ever had.

In 1991, Jimmy Don's Picante Sauce became a gift for customers and friends of Herb's. That year we made 300 1/2 pints for Christmas gifts. It didn't take long to realize we needed a lot more than that to satisfy everyone. The second year we increased the production to 700 pints so people could have more than 1 jar. With that, Jimmy Don's Picante Sauce started being shared with friends and family members, some of which lived as far away as Mexico, Canada, Germany, and even Japan. It was when we started receiving requests for more jars from people we didn't even know, some of which were out of the country, that Jimmy Don's Picante Sauce gained its "World Famous" status. Since then, the production has grown every year. This past year required 4,000 jars to fulfill the needs and requests. The distribution of Jimmy Don's Picante Sauce has moved from Christmas to become a summer time treat. The lure to take this blend of tomatoes and spices retail has been avoided by everyone at Herb's. Therefore, the only way to get a hold of this addictive concoction is by being friends, family or a customer of Herb's Paint and Body.

The Recipe: Until now the recipe was relatively secret. Not because we tried to hide it, we were just careful with it. Over the years we have had countless requests for the recipe. We have even seen a few of our competitors try their hand at it. If you have entered this website, you now have the proper security clearance and are authorized to move forward with creating your own batch.

1 gal. of crushed tomatoes (canned)
¾ cup of sugar
3 cups chopped onion
¼ cup dried cilantro
2 ½ cups chopped jalapenos
1 lemon squeezed
½ cup minced garlic
½ cup powered fajita seasoning
½ cup Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons A-1 steak sauce
Mix ingredients over heat. Heat until powdered ingredients are dissolved. Let cool and serve. Congratulations, you have just become a picante master. Now, pull out a bag of chips and get ready for some of your own addictive concoction. But be careful who you give it to because before you know it, it might be known as, insert name here World Famous Picante Sauce. Then, you'll be cookin' it up for the whole neighborhood!

We would like to hear your comments. Let us know your favorite way to use it. Do you put it in queso, put it on eggs, mix it in your chili, pour it over fruit loops, or just eat it with chips.
